Portsmouth Pull rowing series to be launched in wake of successful pilot event
After last weekend’s successful Portsmouth Pull test event and overwhelmingly positive feedback from all involved, we’re busy planning a series of events to give more teams the opportunity to row a lap of our iconic harbour to raise funds for Oarsome Chance.
On Saturday the Little Victory team put on a stonking performance to win in a time of just 1 hour and 27 minutes despite challenging conditions and battling 20-knot headwinds. Little Warrior finished second in 1hr 45mins and OC1 finished third in 2hrs 7mins. OC2 retired due to the challenging weather conditions.
“Little Victory really went for it and set the time to beat for future events. We’re expecting some fierce competition when the next set of teams take on the challenge later this year,” John Gillard, Oarsome Chance Principal, said.
“Despite some sore hands and bums, it was a brilliant event and everyone was buzzing afterwards. We’re now looking forward to holding a series of Portsmouth Pull challenges, building on the success of last weekend’s test event. As well as taking on an exciting personal challenge, the teams will be helping us to raise vital funding for Oarsome Chance projects,” John added.
We’re extremely grateful to everybody who helped to make the event such a great success including all our staff and volunteers, the four teams who took part, St Vincent College, the Maritime Workshop Trust and the Gosport Ferry and also to Alex Thomson Racing and Pure Latitude for kindly loaning their RIBs to provide safety cover for the event.
We’re also grateful to Jason Brodie-Browne of Browne Photographics for capturing such powerful images, which have helped to secure us great media coverage in The News, Portsmouth and also on BBC Online.
We’d also like to extend our thanks to QHM Portsmouth for their co-operation. It was a very busy weekend in Portsmouth Harbour and it was good to know that all the activities, including ours, were being coordinated so professionally.
