Awesome driving from Team Premier Marina to win the inaugural Oarsome Chance endurance kart race!

10 teams with 74 drivers took to the TeamSport Gosport indoor karting track for an evening of thrills, spills, endurance driving and fundraising in our inaugural Le Mans style 2 hour endurance race.

We were delighted to have been given support from teams sponsored by SLEC Models, Haselworth School (Teachers), HMS KIng Alfred naval reserves, Alex Thomson Racing, Britannia Sailing Events, Premier Marina Endeavour Quay, Neville Thomson Training, Village Hotels Portsmouth and 21 Townsend.

With 170 laps over two hours the race was hotly contested, but the team that came out on top as winners with most laps completed and the fastest lap of the evening, were Premier Marina Endeavour Quay led by Team Principal (and life long friend of Christian Horner) Tim Newell, whose daytime job is as boatyard manager at Endeavour Quay.

The evening was not without its controversy, with Premier Marina only narrowly beating semi pro karting team Britannia Sailing by just one lap, Britannia Sailing being victims of a dubious and hotly contested black flag lap penalty deduction (was there a bribe by ATR racing to the marshalls??)

These two teams, sporting drivers with prior experience, proved a hard act to beat by some of our more novice teams. But track testing and work is already underway by some of our teams to come up with the driver team and kart package to beat these "pros" at the "Race the Sun" 12 hour endurance marathon in September (spaces still available).

Our women's team trophy (a bottle of rare vintage red claret) was won by the very able Hasleworth Harriers and several drivers in that team are looking for contracts with the better funded and better equipped top tier male teams.

The evening was superbly managed by TeamSport Gosport and all of our participants thoroughly enjoyed the track, the equipment and their safe management of the event. Our sincere thanks to their staff for the help over the evening.

As well as ensuring everyone has a great time at these events, naturally our main goal through team entry fees and generous donation and sponsorship, is to raise vital funding for Oarsome Chance projects, which benefit local vulnerable and disadvantaged young people. Everyone's generosity at events like this helps raise the vital and necessary additional funding to assist OC in its work bringing vocational and outdoor education opportunities to Gosport, Portsmouth and Havant young people.

We are extremely grateful to all who attended and whose companies supported our evening. All the trustees of OC would like to thank everyone who helped make the evening such a success with our special thanks going to Ross Daniel of Alex Thomson Racing and Neville Thomson for their support and marketing efforts, to Village Hotels for donating spa day vouchers and to Gill Thomson for the supply of High Protein Granola that provided much needed human fuel to our drivers!

Hope to see many of you driving again at the "Oarsome Race The Sun" 12 hour endurance event in September or for those that enjoy a challenge out on the waters of beautiful Portsmouth Harbour our ‘Pompey Pull’ from Gosport to Port Solent and back offers a unique rowing challenge and sponsorship opportunity. Contact [email protected] for more details of upcoming challenge events.
