We were delighted to welcome the new Mayor for Gosport, Councillor Mrs Zoe Huggins, accompanied by her Consort Mr Darren Huggins at our Maritime workshop in Gosport on Friday 10 July.

Oarsome Chance were recently nominated by Councillor Huggins as one of the charities she will be supporting during her year as Mayor of Gosport and to mark the occasion we invited the Mayor to officially launch our brand new electric minivan. The new vehicle will work hard for our programmes transporting young people, some of whom travel from as far away as Southampton, as well as getting all the equipment we use to where it needs to be.

When we neeeded a new vehicle to serve our growing programmes, we decided that an electric vehicle would be in keeping with our commitment to minimising our environmental impact, as well as reducing transport costs in the long term – saving money, while saving the planet! We were very fortunate to be awarded funding from The Clothworkers’ Foundation as well as The Bernard Sunley Foundation to help with the purchased of the new eco-friendly Nissan e-nv200 vehicle.

John Gillard, Principal for Oarsome Chance said “We are passionate about offering the best support we can to the young people we work with and a part of this is ensuring we can safely transport students and equipment between our centres. We are also passionate about doing what we can to reduce our carbon footprint and we are really putting our money where our mouth is by committing to electric powered transport. And it sets a great example to our students.”

The unveiling ceremony was attended by some of the young people and staff team. The Mayor of Gosport, Zoe Huggins said “I was more than happy to accept Oarsome Chance’s invitation to launch their new electric vehicle. Oarsome Chance are doing some amazing work for our local young people and this has been a wonderful way to launch our partnership. I’m looking forward to working with Oarsome Chance over the coming months.”
